September 26 Crossing America

Moncks Corner, SC – Andrews, SC a distance of 40 miles.
5,900 miles traveled through today, 4,807 of them on a bicycle.

One of the toughest things I’m coping with is meeting friends and having to say goodbye and move on so quickly.  I’ll forever cherish the memory of these friends who have made my Crossing America so much more than an adventure.  To all of you who have befriended during this journey thank you.

Again today there was a heavy fog to cope with so I stopped at a Huddle House Restaurant, great place for a hearty breakfast at a reasonable price, for breakfast and wait for some of the fog to burn off.  Thank you Jack for turning me onto this great little chain restaurant it’s as cheap and heck of a lot better than Mickey D’s.

Since I had to go an extra 22 miles yesterday today is relatively easy even with a headwind.  Not a lot to look at on these roads, generally woods on both sides of
the road.  The Palmettos have disappeared so guess they are more of a Deep South shrub or tree?

This mailbox was about the only interesting thing to take a picture of today. I wish I could take a picture of the goodness in the heart of folks I've met.

Arriving in Andrews I learned the town is too small for a full-time fire department so went to the nearest church to see if I could stay the night.  Evidently Andrews has a Ministerial Alliance as they sent me to a second church.  The pastor wasn’t there but one of the ladies who I visited with knew who to call a Ms. Becky who set me up with a motel room, in the only motel in town, after  visiting with me on the phone a couple minutes.  Beggars can’t be choosey but I’d much prefer sleeping on the floor of a church where I most likely would be able to visit with folks.  The solitude of a motel room is depressing.  That said it did provide me the time to make three posts today.

While at the second church there was an elderly gentleman who was listening to my brief introduction I’ve come up with when asking for a place to stay and was waiting for me when I went outside.  He was quite interested in my journey and asked many questions.  When we finished visiting he extended his hand to me and thanked me for being an inspiration as I made his day.  Wow!  This is the second gentleman in as many days to make a similar statement and shake my hand.  It is I who is thankful for being blessed to have made this journey of discovery.

Thank you to the churches of Andrews for providing shelter this night and to one Christian gentleman who made my day.

    Hi Frank,
No, I have not forgotten you. I check your posts periodically and glad you are still on this side of the grass! I was beginning to worry when you finished stage two and started stage three. You had a big gap in posts and I thought some “idiot” forced you off the road. I pictured you in a body cast in some Florida hospital! You are so close now to fulfilling your dream of biking across our great country. You have strength undefeatable! Good job, my friend.

Hi Barbara Ann, It’s great to hear from you and that you are still checking my journal. I’ve been logging some big miles coming up the East Coast, getting in late or visiting with friends. I’m doing better the past few day but still about three or four days behind. Less then 500 miles to go as of this day. The best part of my Crossing has been meeting hundreds make that thousands of fantastic folks. My strength to complete the journey has come from you and other friends who inspire me to carry on. Thank you for being my friend.
