KATY Trail 2012 Day 1

July 7-17, 2012. This will be my first attempt to serve as SAG for a small group of friends who will embark on their first long distance bicycle adventure. The KATY Trail (Missouri, Kansas Texas “MKT” Railroad) currently at 237.7 miles in length is the longest rail road route converted to a bicycle/pedestrian trail in the USA. It is also the longest and thinest State Park in Missouri. The trail consists of crushed limestone, two thirds of which runs parallel to the Missouri River. Additional history to the railroad era is that the river section was also navigated by the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition. Plus Daniel Boone settled a stretch of the river when he given a land grant from the Spanish to expedite the settlement of this vast wilderness area. Little did they know at the time the French would claim the land and then sell it to the US, known as “The Louisana Purchase”.
Candice Moore kept a daily journal and I’ve asked her permission to publish it here. It may take a few days or weeks to obtain her journal and transcribe but it will be done. In the meantime, enjoy the pictorial essay below.
