Bike US for MS crew at Victory Monument

Dipping our rear tire in Atlantice Ocean

Yorktown, VA – Glendale, VA Distance 68 miles
Day one of my long awaited adventure is over!  Stage 1 began at 8:20 AM with pictures in front of the Yorktown Victory Monument, where King George surrendered Britain and Ireland’s rights to the 13 colonies.  Next we went a block to the beach to dip our rear tires in the Atlantic, next dipping will be the front tires in Pacific ocean.  Today we covered 62 miles, in 90 degree temp and high humidity.  I was last one finished today but to my credit I did stop and help two folks with mechanical problems and shared the last of my water with another.  Seems all the stores along the last 27 miles were closed for remodeling and they didn’t even have a tornado.

I might lose more weight than originally thought if more days go like today.  No restaurant open for breakfast so ate a breakfast bar only.  At lunch had a Turkey sandwich but didn’t have appetite to finish it.  For dinner I made Mac & Cheese but ruined it by adding potted meat.  Trust me don’t ever ever buy potted meat, it looked like and smelled like running cat food.  I don’t think any of my cats would have eaten it.  I managed to choke down ¾ quarters of it as need nourishment for tomorrow.  I Did drink over 3 gallons of liquids today, mostly water which I’m still drinking at this moment.

I’m pretty tired so keeping this short.  Hope to start much earlier tomorrow as it will be an 80 mile day.  Want to get most of the ride done before it gets too hot, hopefully.  I’ll try to post a picture with the blog but not until have internet service again.  Tonight we are staying at a Methodist Church, have toilet facilities and able to sleep on floor of rec-room but no showers.  Hopefully will be somewhere we can take a shower tomorrow night.

Old Guy signing out for tonight as I need some sleep to stay up with these youngsters.

Been working and just read your 1st day. It doesn’t matter what place you finished – you did it and you helped someone along the way. I will not ever buy potted meat, thanks for the tip. Try not to make yourself sick by only drinking liquids.

Hi Ted, the Trans-Am route keeps us in pretty rural areas. This is only the third time I’ve been able to get internet service. The first two times I needed to get my blog up to date. Hope I’ve not been too negative with several of my posts. I will endure and enjoy my journey across America. Looking forward to sharing that experience with you.
