Oh My Goodness!!! What a delight to discover Mama’s Greek Cuisine near the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs. “The food is to die for” as the saying goes, here at mama’s you will find homemade Greek food prepared to perfection and lots of it, too. We were also blessed with being served by one of the best waitresses ever, Bonnie. Both my significant other and I love Authentic Greek food, neither of us could decide which delicious entrée we should try. Bonnie suggested we try the Greek Combo Platter as it includes Pastitso, Mousalka, Dolmades, and Gyro meat with tzatziki and top off with a delicious Baklava for desert. I’m a pretty healthy eater, especially after riding our bicycles 28 miles this day, and was going to order the Combo Platter for me and Karla would order Dolmades. Bonnie said, the combo plate was large, included not one but two Dolmades and included a choice of a Greek salad or fresh homemade Lentil soup; perhaps we’d like to order a second salad or soup and split the combo dinner. With the enthusiasm and sincerity of Bonnie we went with her suggestion. We ordered the Combo Plate and two cups of Lentil soup. Immediately Bonnie served us a half loaf of freshly baked bread with a dish of olive oil and spices for dunking. The Lentil soup was homemade and was some of the tastiest either of us had ever had. Trust me Karla and I lived in the Chicagoland area and know good Greek food. As we were discussing which wine to order, Bonnie ever the attentive server, suggested we try the Sangria, which too is made at Mama’s, not poured out of a store bought bottle. Yep, this server knows what’s good and will assist you in selecting great food and drink.
Wow! When Bonnie brought out the Combo Platter it was heaped full of some mighty fine home cooking, plus a side order of potatoes in butter sauce and two plates. As mentioned above I’ve got a big appetite and generally have no difficulty chowing down on my meal and sharing some of Karla’s dinner, not tonight, after eating all my tummy could hold, we still had enough great tasting food left over to feed a third person. Just when I didn’t think I could eat another bite, Bonnie delivered two healthy portions of Baklava to the table, this crisp pastry with a glaze of honey melted in our mouth. Had I really died and this was food served in heaven, just maybe it is. Ahhhh!!!
If you are ever in or near Tarpon Springs at lunch or dinner time, love Greek food, homey atmosphere with fantastic service (Be sure to ask for Bonnie to be your server) you have got to dine at Mama’s Greek Cuisine, it truly is Authentic Greek Cooking at its best. By the way it’s also a favorite eating place of the locals.
